Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Heritage Council has been urged to immediately carry out its statutory duty to restore and rehabilitate the fire-damaged Kota Kinabalu Community Centre.
Former Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee said the historic building remains in a dilapidated state more than a year after it was damaged by fire.
He noted that during a site inspection on Monday, the boarded-up site was found overgrown with shrubs and covered with torn canvas in the heart of the city centre.
Yong said the building is a gazetted protected heritage site under the Sabah Heritage Enactment 2017, which legally entrusts the council to conserve state heritage.
He called on the council and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment to reveal if a Conservation and Management Plan has been prepared under Section 40 of the enactment and to explain their course of action.
