Last weekend after visiting the home of my wife, Zarina's sister in-law, Hajah Nurul Jannah & children for Eid al-Fitr gatherings at Taman Keramat, my family planned to drive around the nostalgic Taman Bukit Ampang, a freehold mixed development that we owned a property in 1980s. On the way, we passed through the bustling Ampang Point township and my children spotted AMP Cafe which they decided to stop-over for refreshments. I amazed with the fast development and growth of the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) are defined by its transformation from a historic tin-mining settlement into a high-density, livable digital city. It is currently one of the Malaysia's most urbanized areas, with a population exceeding 668,000 and a density that rivals major hubs like Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya. It was established on July 1992 by merging the sub-districts of Ulu Klang & Ampang. (www.mpaj.gov.my)
According to MPAJ, Ampang has targeted achieving city status, backed by annual revenues surpassing RM100 million and a population exceeding the 500,000 threshold required for such an upgrade. Future development of “Ampang KITA” and the Ampang Jaya Local Plan 2035 outlines a shift toward a sustainable, “Eco-Vibrant City”. I am indeed pleased to learn that despite rapid urbanization, the plan aims to preserve at least 50% of forested areas.
