MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles members Sam Reyes and Kieffer Alas said that coach Tab Baldwin briefed the team about "rip current" days before they held their training in Dipaculao, Aurora, which coasts are notorious for the said water movement and strong waves.
"We had meetings before training that coach Tab explained us about rip currents and how to get out of rip currents," said third year player Sam Reyes during Pia Hontiveros-Pagkalinawan’s "Let's Talk" podcast.
Rookie Kieffer Alas added:
"We talked about it a couple of days before. We had a pretty long discussion about it, like 'swim vertical to the shore, if there's a rip current' and he (Baldwin) warned us about the uneven sand that it can randomly go back down and up"
The "rip current" was said to be the reason that led to the drowning of Reyes and Alas' teammates Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
