MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo player Kiefer Alas acknowledged that the delayed response contributed to the spread of speculation, rumors, and online backlash following the recent controversy.
He explained that the lack of information led the public to rely on photos, hearsay, and assumptions, which intensified criticism toward the players.
Alas revealed that the situation became overwhelming, prompting them to finally speak out. “We want to talk now. Di talaga namin kinaya (We really couldn't handle it). It was getting too much,” he said during Pia Hontiveros’ Let’s Talk podcast.
He also admitted that fear initially held them back from granting interviews, citing concerns over misinterpretation and personal safety. “We were actually scared to do an interview because we saw that they were twisting a lot of words. I don’t want to risk my family or myself,” he added.
Alas noted that in the first two days after the incident, it was difficult for them to speak up due to the emotional toll.
“That was part of the conversation, yung lack of information. Kasi po, the first two days it was hard for us to talk about it,” Alas said. TMT
