BEAUFORT: Police have arrested a woman to assist investigations into a scam involving the sale of non-existent gold through Instagram.
District Police Chief Supt Champin Piuh confirmed the arrest on Monday, saying the suspect was believed to be the bank account holder whose account was used for transactions linked to the case.
Initial investigations found that the suspect admitted handing over her ATM card and password to a man known as “Ahcai”, allegedly for the purpose of obtaining a loan.
“The suspect later realised that her account had been blocked by the bank and claimed she was unaware that it had been used for fraudulent activities,” Champin said.
The suspect was arrested under Ops Kesan Khas 1/2026, with further action to be taken by police.
Police advised the public not to hand over ATM cards or passwords, or allow their bank accounts to be used by others, to prevent them from being misused for online fraud.
Meanwhile, police have arrested three men in Bandar Minggo in connection with the theft of vehicle tyres.
Acting on information, police from the Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) unit arrested a man suspected of stealing three tyres and rims in Kampung Bingkul and Kampung Binunuk at a car park in Bandar Minggo.
Champin said initial investigations found that the suspect admitted involvement in the theft, leading to the arrest of two other men to assist investigations into the tyre theft in Kampung Binunuk.
Efforts to recover the stolen items and further investigations are ongoing. The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code.
He said police would not allow anyone to carry out property crimes that could jeopardise public safety and order.
“The public are also advised to remain vigilant and promptly channel information on any suspicious activities to the police,” he said.
