SHAH ALAM - A businessman pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to cheating a man of RM1.65 million in a deal to purchase a durian orchard in Raub in February 2024.

Chan Huann Heng, 58, was charged with deceiving the 66-year-old victim into transferring RM1.65 million from a company account through an invoice for the purchase of the orchard.

The offence was allegedly committed at a clubhouse in Jalan Kelab Tropicana, Petaling district, on Feb 5, 2024, under Section 420 of the Penal Code (Act 574).

If convicted, Chan, a chief executive officer of a vegetable import and export company faces up to 10 years’ imprisonment, whipping and a fine.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy public prosecutor Muaz Ahmad Khairuddin proposed bail of RM100,000 with one surety, citing the substantial amount involved.

However, defence counsel Dhanesh Subramaniam Nair sought a reduction in bail, saying his client’s business had been affected by the case and that he had cooperated with investigators.

Judge Dazuki Ali granted bail of RM80,000 with one local surety and fixed Nov 30 for mention. - BERNAMA
