MANILA, Philippines — The northeast (amihan) season has started, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
"Over the past few days, observations have indicated the strengthening of a high-pressure area over East Asia, which has caused a surge of northeasterly winds over Extreme Northern Luzon," Pagasa said in a statement on Tuesday.
"In addition, other environmental conditions, which include the increasing atmospheric pressure and cooling of the surroundings, have been observed. These meteorological patterns indicate the start of the Northeast Monsoon (Amihan) season," it said.
Pagasa added that forecasts indicated "successive surges of the monsoon over the next two weeks that may cause rough" seas over Northern Luzon's seaboards.
"With these developments, the Amihan is expected to be more dominant in most areas of the country, bringing cool and dry air and episodes of cold temperature surges," Pagasa said.
Rough seas and shear lines were expected within the amihan season, it said.
