Cristiano Ronaldo might have won almost everything there is to win in soccer but a heartfelt message from his mother surely ranks highly in his list of awards.
The 41-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable career and one that keeps on giving.
Indeed, Ronaldo scored a brace for Portugal against Uzbekistan in its 5-0 win in Houston last week, making history in the process.
Those goals made him the first player to ever score at six men’s World Cup finals, etching his name even further into the record books.
Ahead of Portugal’s last group stage game against Colombia in Miami, the forward’s mother – Maria Dolores – sent him a special message.
Ronaldo’s mother expresses her pride
Maria Dolores spoke of her pride in her son for such an incredible achievement.
In a video posted by FIFA on social media platform X, she said: “Good afternoon, I’m proud that my son continues to make history. I just want to thank all the fans that have been by your side. You’ve given so much to the world.
“A kiss to you, my son. Your mother is always here for you. I want to thank everyone for the respect you have shown my son. I want to thank Portugal and all the Portuguese fans.
“I hope football continues to bring people together. Go, Portugal. Kisses.”
Ronaldo was roundly mocked for a poor performance in Portugal’s opening group stage game against DR Congo but responded when he next took to the field.
Incredibly, the prospect of him playing for Portugal in the 2030 World Cup is yet to be ruled out entirely.
They will joint-host the tournament alongside Spain and Morocco, with some games also being played in Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina as the World Cup celebrates its 100 anniversary.

Ronaldo is yet to win the World Cup, or even score in the knockout stages. Still, there’s little doubt his record will stand for some time. Not many players even get close to what he has done across consecutive World Cups.
No matter what one may think of him at this stage of his career, it is a fantastic achievement and to see his mother so proud certainly brings a human aspect to a player who has become a global corporate force.
