SABAH Housing and Real Estate Developers Association (Shareda) is not happy with the increase in custodial sentence of up to 5 years’ jail for housing developers who abandoned their projects. The maximum imprisonment in peninsula Malaysia for similar offence is only up to 3 years.
Shareda President Datuk Sr Chua Soon Ping said no developer would want to abandon their projects wilfully, as there are many events that are beyond the control of developers such as financial crisis, natural disaster or force majeure, civil unrest, pandemic and quarantine.
As well as infrastructure failures on the part of the SESB and Water Department, unavailability of raw material like cement, logistics issues and compliance cost, etc.
