Kota Kinabalu: Youth Development, Sports Advancement and Creative Economy Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan praised the State’s Para athletes for their outstanding performance at the recently concluded Para Sukma in Selangor.
He noted that their success underscores a profound commitment to excellence and proves their ability to shine on the national stage.
The State contingent finished second overall behind the hosts, securing an impressive haul of 69 gold, 51 silver and 45 bronze medals, while smashing 18 new records.
“I extend my heartfelt congratulations and deepest appreciation to the entire Sabah Para Sukma contingent for their outstanding performance and remarkable achievements at the Selangor Para Sukma 2026.
“Throughout the games, they demonstrated exceptional fighting spirit, resilience, discipline, and determination. This proud achievement is the direct result of their rigorous, long-term preparation and training.
“Even more gratifying is that our tally of 69 gold medals successfully surpassed our initial target of 66. This significant milestone highlights the exceptional capability of our para-athletes to compete and excel at the national level.
“This achievement proves once again that nothing is beyond our reach when we unite with cooperation, discipline, commitment and hard work.
“Surpassing our target of 66 gold medals confirms that our current para-sports development programmes are on the right track. However, this success is no reason for complacency; instead, it must serve as a new benchmark to further elevate athlete preparation and performance in the future,” he said.
He expressed his gratitude to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, for his support and commitment to sports development in the state, including para-sports.
“The State Government’s continued support is crucial in ensuring that Sabah’s athletes have the opportunities to develop their potential and deliver their best when representing the State,” he stated.
He congratulated Datuk Mansur Asun, permanent secretary of the Ministry and contingent head, praising his leadership and coordination alongside the management team during the games.
He also commended the Sabah State Sports Council, under the leadership of Mohd Asneh Mohd Noor, for their success in implementing effective athlete preparation and development programmes.
“An athlete’s success does not happen in isolation; rather, it requires a committed team that ensures every aspect of the athlete’s preparation receives due attention.
“These achievements reflect the systematic planning, training and programmes designed to prepare our athletes for competition. Equal appreciation goes to the coaches, officials and support teams who worked tirelessly behind the scenes.
“I also wish to extend my deepest gratitude to the athletes’ families, who serve as their constant source of strength. Their unwavering support, encouragement, patience and sacrifice are vital to every athlete’s journey toward success,” he added.
