TONGOD: Tongod is set to be the first district in Sabah to establish a dedicated area for a planned Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) housing village.

Kuamut Assemblyman Datuk Masiung Banah said this new framework for SMJ development is targeted for implementation in Kuamut next year.

He made the announcement after handing over keys to two newly completed SMJ houses in Kampung Purutowa, recently.

“I have directed the District Officer and Community Development Leader to identify strategic areas to be gazetted as a new SMJ village,” Masiung said.

“We are confident that once the State Government is able to form a new government, this SMJ village will be created as the first module of its kind in Sabah,” he added.

He said the planned settlement approach would streamline infrastructure development, making it easier to provide roads, water supply and electricity in an organised manner.

As the number of SMJ houses increases year by year, the government would also find it more efficient to establish public facilities such as community halls, kindergartens and clinics in the designated areas.

Currently, the State Government under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor allocates 40 houses per constituency at a cost of RM3.2 million.

The SMJ housing assistance introduced by the current State Government is provided free of charge to eligible Sabah residents.

Tongod District Officer Mohd Yuseri Ismail Yusof and Community Development Leader Tokyo Hasim Omar were also present at the ceremony.
