A German glider pilot was killed after his aircraft crashed in the western Austrian state of Tyrol near the German border, police said on Thursday.

The accident occurred near the town of Ehrwald in a mountainous area close to Bavaria. Police said the 72-year-old pilot crashed into a rock face near the 2,500-metre Breitenkopf mountain at around 1 pm (1100 GMT).

The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.

Authorities and an aviation expert were investigating the circumstances of the accident.
