
PAPAR: The Inspire Karate Club yet again achieved commendable performance, securing fourth place after bagging five golds, two silvers and six bronzes in the 2023 Wakodai Karate Open Championship, Brunei.
Its Delegation Chief Halid Jualili along with Chief Coach John Tam led the team against 12 other teams from Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei Indonesia, Philippines and Singapore throughout the competition that took place from Aug 25-27 at Hassanal Bolkiah National Indoor Stadium, Berakas, Brunei Darussalam.
Alyssa Tam (MAHSA College, Kota Kinabalu) bagged gold in the Individual Senior Female Kumite 55kg category while Awang Muhammad Arif Aqil Ahzim (SK Benoni, Papar) and Adam Zaidan Abdul Kadir won the Individual Boys Kumite, 8 to 9 and 6 to 7 years old, respectively.
Nurhannah Redzuan, Nurjannah Redzuan and Aisyah Zahraa Akop (SK Surati, Papar) bagged gold in the 8 to 9 years old Girls Team Kumite category in which Nurjannah also displayed her solo skills in the Individual Girls Kumite category by winning gold.

Read more Syasya Syamsina Ridzuan (SK Kelatuan, Papar) and Donovan Raphael (SMK Majakir, Papar) both won silver for the Individual Girls Kumite 10 to 11-years-old (35kg) and Individual Senior Male Kumite 75kg categories, respectively.
Dunstan Raphael (SM St Joseph, Papar) won third place in the Cadet Male Individual Kumite above 63kg category while Muhammad Muaz Haqeem Hasbilah (SK Surati, Papar) bagged bronze in Individual Boys.
Adam Zaidan Abdul Kadir (SK St Joseph, Papar) also won third place in the Individual Boys Kata 6 to 7 years old while Syura Syazwina Ridzuan (SK Kelatuan, Papar) also bagged bronze for the Individual Girls Kumite.
Like Nurjannah, Nurhannah displayed his individual abilities and managed to win third place in the Individual Girls Kumite (8 to 9 years old – above 25kg) category alongside her team member Syifa Shamina Ridzuan (SK Kelatuan, Papar) who won the Individual Girls Kumite (8 to 9 years old – 25kg) category.
Tam was proud of the team’s achievement saying that resilient training and dedication had been key to the karatekas’ success.
“The athletes have poured in their hard work and efforts in self-preparation for the tournament and it has paid off with impressive results.
“This tournament has also presented the karatekas the opportunity to evaluate themselves and give them valuable experience that would help them grow into better athletes,” he said.
