ITCZ to bring rains to parts of PH on Thursday

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) forecast rains to some areas on Thursday because of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).

Pagasa Weather Specialist Benison Estareja said in the 5 p.m. weather update that a large part of Palawan, Visayas, and Mindanao would have rains on Thursday because of the ITCZ.

"Expect that as early as morning, there will be a chance of rains and cloudiness here in Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, also here in Central Visayas, Southern Leyte, and the northern part of the Caraga region," Estareja said in Filipino and English.

He said that by noon to evening, rains are to be expected in a large part of Palawan, the rest of the Visayas, and the rest of Mindanao.

"So make sure that if you are going out tomorrow, bring an umbrella or raincoat and also take care against the threat of floods and landslides especially if heavy rains will continue," he said.

Estareja said that there was a chance of rains "as early as morning" in Romblon, Masbate, and Sorsogon and that by noon to afternoon, "the chance of rains is...high over the rest of Mimaropa" and the rest of Bicol. He then said that the same goes for Quezon Province.

He told the public to expect partly cloudy and often sunny skies in northern Philippines. "And if there will be rains, these will be just light and brief in  the mountains," he said. "That includes the Cagayan Valley, Cordillera region, Ilocos region, and also...the northern part of Central Luzon," he said.

As to Metro Manila, the southern parts of Central Luzon, and nearby provinces in Calabarzon, Estareja told the public to expect partly cloudy and at times sunny skies. He added that the chance of rains was low in some areas. "Otherwise, more on thunderstorms lasting just one to two hours by the afternoon," he said.

Based on data shown during the update, the temperature can reach 33 degrees Celsius in Metro Manila, Legazpi, Laoag, Tuguegarao, and Zamboanga City.

Based on the forecast and on data shown during the update, temperatures on Thursday can reach 32 degrees Celsius in the Kalayaan Islands and Puerto Princesa, Metro Cebu, Iloilo, Tacloban, Cagayan de Oro, and Metro Davao.
