LPA, ITCZ bring rains to Metro Manila, nearby areas

MANILA, Philippines — A low pressure area (LPA) and the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) are expected to bring scattered rains and thunderstorms to Metro Manila and parts of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao on Saturday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

In its 5 a.m. forecast on Oct. 10, Pagasa located the LPA 410 kilometers east of Catarman, Northern Samar, at 3 a.m.

Weather specialist Veronica C. Torres said the LPA had a very low chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours.

“However, it is indeed possible for it to cross our land, and if that happens, it is also possible for it to dissipate,” Torres said in Filipino, explaining that the weather system could cross land and dissipate.

Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Bicol Region and Mimaropa may experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms. Pagasa warned of possible flash floods and landslides due to moderate to, at times, heavy rains.

The easterlies are expected to bring scattered rains and thunderstorms to Cagayan Valley, Aurora, Nueva Ecija and Bulacan, while Batanes may experience cloudy skies with light rains. The rest of Luzon may have isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

Another LPA outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility was last spotted 2,260 kilometers east of southeastern Luzon. Pagasa said it had a moderate chance of developing into a tropical cyclone but was not expected to enter the country's area of responsibility or directly affect the Philippines.

Typhoon Koguma, meanwhile, was last spotted 3,200 kilometers east of extreme Northern Luzon, outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility. Pagasa said it was not expected to enter the area or directly affect the country.

Rainy conditions are expected to persist over Visayas and Mindanao in the coming days, although Pagasa said its five-day outlook could still change.
