Fined and jailed for having SESB cable

Kota Kinabalu: A 49-year-old man was fined RM100 or two days’ jail for having cable believed belonging to SESB by the Magistrate’s Court, Wednesday.

Mohammad Azreel William Abdullah, 49, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Wan Farrah Fariza Wan Ghazali to having the cable which he failed to give satisfactory explanation as to how he obtained them at 9.10pm on Jan 20 front of St Theresa Church, Kampung Kolopis, Penampang.

Azreel was charged under Section22A (1) of the Minor Offences Ordinance which provides a fine of up to RM100 or up three months jail or both, on conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ling Ghuong Zin told the court that the complainant saw smoke and promptly rushed to the location where they discovered a Proton Saga car and two unknown men burning something suspicious.

Upon arrival, police discovered two men burning a bundle of cables.

When the two men became aware of the police presence, they attempted to flee. One was arrested, while the other managed to escape into the forest.

Duty Counsel Lim Ming Zhong, representing Azreel, requested a lenient sentence as he was currently unemployed and married with four children.

In the same court, two security guards were jailed 18 months for having drugs.

Rizwan Gery, 19, was jailed nine months from date of arrest on Oct 21, 2023 at Taman Indah Permai, Manggatal for having 0.06gm syabu.

Anuar Kundul, 32, was jailed for nine months from date of arrest on Oct 27, 2023 for having 0.002gm of syabu at Penampang.

Ling told the court that police seized a packet containing drug substances from Rizwan.

The packet was sent to the Chemistry Department, which confirmed it to be syabu and led to Rizwan arrest.

Unrepresented, Rizwan asked for leniency. Meanwhile, Duty Counsel Carmen Khoo, representing Anuar, also requested leniency, noting that he is married with five children and is remorseful.
