Man charged over belt assault

Kota Kinabalu: A 44-year-old man was charged in the Magistrate’s Court here, Tuesday, with attacking a man with a belt last year.

Musa Sumalah pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to causing hurt to one Jeffery Yeoh with a belt at 12.10am on Nov 29, 2021 at the Safma Fisheries Complex, Jalan Tun Fuad Stephen here.

Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik prosecuting applied for case management (CM) date and proposed bail at RM4,000 in two sureties.

Musa, who was not represented, requested a lower bail amount as he has dependents.

He was charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 10 years, or with fine, or with whipping, or with any two of such punishments, on conviction.

The court set Aug 23 for case management and released Musa on a bail of RM2,000 in two sureties.

In another case, an unemployed man claimed trial for stealing a handphone.

Juraman Rudy, 26, was accused of stealing the gadget at 7.17am on July 12 at a shop on the ground floor of the Centre Point Complex here.

He was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code. The prosecution in applying for a CM date proposed bail at RM3,000 in two sureties.

Duty counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence, representing Juraman, requested a lower bail amount on the ground that he is currently unemployed.

Lovely set Aug 22 for CM date and offered Juraman bail at RM1,500 in two sureties.
