Kota Kinabalu: A 47-year-old man was fined RM100 or two weeks’ jail and jailed five weeks by the Magistrate’s Court here for having copper cables suspected to be stolen.
Mohd Norhadi @ Bobby Saidi pleaded guilty before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus to having three bags containing copper cables at about 9am, on Sept 1, by the roadside at Lorong Nilam, Tanjung Aru, here.
The offence under Section 22A(1) of the Minor Offences Ordinance, Cap 80, read with Section 34 of the Penal Code, provides a fine not more than RM100 or jail term of up to three months or both on conviction.
The court heard from the prosecution that on the said day, police saw three suspicious men and a yellow Perodua Axia during a crime-prevention operation at the location.
When the team approached, two men fled into a bushy area while Norhadi, who was driving the car, was detained.
A search of the vehicle in his presence found a black plastic bag, a white sack and a black luggage bag containing copper cables in the rear boot.
Norhadi admitted he was the driver and that the vehicle belonged to his son-in-law, but denied involvement in burning electrical cables.
However, he failed to give a satisfactory explanation of how he obtained the copper cables.
In another case, 31-year-old woman was fined RM1,000 or two months’ jail for gambling in a public place.
Nooraini Abd Hamza pleaded guilty to gambling online at about 2pm, on Aug 16 in front of a premises next to a grocery shop at Kampung Sembulan, here.
She was charged under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
The court heard from the prosecution that police arrested Nooraini and seized equipment used for online gambling, while a gambling expert’s report confirmed the items were used for the activity.
Meanwhile, a 38-year-old man was fined RM100 or seven days’ jail for entering a vehicle without a satisfactory reason.
Jemring Oreng pleaded guilty to intentionally entering a Hyundai EF, at about 12.30pm, on Aug 30 by the roadside at Sepanggar, here.
The offence was committed under Section 17(1) of the Minor Offences Ordinance, which provides RM100 fine, on conviction.
The prosecution informed the court that police received information about a suspicious man inside the locked vehicle and found Jemring inside when they arrived.
He failed to give a reasonable explanation for his presence in the vehicle.
