RANAU: A 77-year-old man was fined RM5,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here for driving without due care and attention along Jalan Ranau-Telupid.
Lim Jet Cheng was ordered to pay the fine, or serve six months in jail in default. The court also ordered that the conviction be endorsed on his driving licence.
He was charged under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention towards other road users.
The offence occurred at about 5.35pm on April 7, 2026, at KM53 of Jalan Ranau-Telupid, involving an Isuzu D-Max driven by Lim and a Nissan lorry.
According to the case facts, police received information about the accident from the Ranau District Police Headquarters and proceeded to the scene to investigate.
The Nissan lorry was travelling from Lahad Datu towards Kota Kinabalu when the Isuzu D-Max allegedly entered its path, resulting in a collision.
The accident caused damage to both vehicles, including the front section of the Nissan lorry.
The case was subsequently investigated and referred to the relevant authorities before Lim was charged in court.
Section 43(1) provides for a fine of between RM5,000 and RM10,000, or imprisonment for up to 12 months, or both, on conviction.
The case serves as a reminder for motorists to exercise greater care and attention, particularly when driving along roads shared with heavy vehicles.
