MANILA, Philippines — Heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon or habagat flooded several areas in Metro Manila on Sunday, with some major roads becoming impassable to light vehicles and one section closed to all types of vehicles.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reported flooding in parts of Quezon City, Las Piñas, Parañaque, Pasay, Mandaluyong, Malabon and Manila.
The deepest flood was recorded in Las Piñas, where water reached knee level at the Alabang-Zapote Junction and along Marcos Alvarez Road from Wonderland to Savemore. Both areas were impassable to light vehicles.
In Parañaque, half-tire-deep flooding was reported near the Ninoy Aquino Oyster Plaza, making the area impassable to light vehicles.
The southbound portion of Dr. A. Santos Avenue in front of SM Sucat in Barangay San Dionisio was closed to all types of vehicles. The northbound portion had water above gutter level but remained passable to all vehicles.
In Malabon, half-tire-deep flooding was reported along M.H. Del Pilar Street in Maysilo, where light vehicles could not pass.
Other flooded roads remained passable despite water reaching gutter to half-tire levels.
In Quezon City, flooded areas included the northbound Edsa-P. Tuazon tunnel, Baloy-Araneta Avenue, Araneta-E. Rodriguez and NS Amoranto.
Gutter-deep flooding was reported at the Roxas Heritage and Roxas-Edsa intersections in Pasay, while Mandaluyong reported similar flooding at F. Ortigas corner Boni Avenue.
In Manila, gutter-deep floods were reported along the Roxas-Pedro Gil service road, the UN Avenue-Taft area and Taft Avenue corner Quirino Avenue.
The MMDA said the volume of rainfall had put pressure on Metro Manila's creeks and waterways. Its personnel continued clearing blocked street drains.
The agency urged motorists to remain alert and monitor latest traffic and flood advisories, noting that road conditions could change depending on the intensity and volume of rainfall.
The MMDA also advised the public to check its social media updates for the latest information on flooded roads and traffic conditions.
