SHAH ALAM – The Najib Razak Solidarity Fund launched to help former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak pay his RM50 million fine has reached RM1 million.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the amount was recorded at 9.30am on Saturday, a day after the fund was launched.
“Alhamdulillah! This morning, as of 9.30am, the Najib Razak Solidarity Fund has reached RM1 million. Continue to contribute even if it is only RM10,” he said in a Facebook post on Saturday.
The fund was launched following the decision of the Federal Territories Pardons Board, which allowed Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to payment of a RM50 million fine and other stipulated conditions.
On Friday, media reports quoted Asyraf as saying that the fund had collected RM634,562.02 within the first three hours of its launch.
Asyraf also said many contributors had donated as little as RM10 and RM50 to the fund.
The fund was launched by Umno to help ease Najib’s burden in paying the RM50 million fine following the decision allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.
Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had earlier said the collection was open to party leaders, members and supporters, as well as any party wishing to voluntarily show their support.
Zahid said the initiative would be carried out transparently and systematically while complying with all applicable regulations and laws.
Yesterday, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim granted Najib a conditional pardon, allowing the former Pekan member of parliament to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.
However, the conditional pardon was subject to the payment of a RM50 million fine and other stipulated conditions.
The decision was made at the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya, which convened on Friday.
