NGCP raises yellow, red alerts for Visayas grid

MANILA, Philippines —  The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) issued red, and yellow alerts for the Visayas grid on Tuesday, as some power plants again went offline with electricity demand expected to be huge in the island group.

In its advisory, NGCP said the yellow alert would be up between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. while the red alert would be between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. when peak demand is expected to reach 2,545 megawatts (MW) over an available capacity of only 2,468 MW.

The transmission firm said that 25 plants were on forced outage, while 22 plants are running on derated capacities, resulting in a total of 685 MW  unavailable to the grid.

NGCP said that Tuesday's red and yellow alerts were mainly due to the unavailability of the Panay Energy Development Corporation Unit 3 and KEPCO SPC Power Corporation Unit 1 plants and the limited imports from Mindanao due to the planned outages of some power plants there.

A red alert is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.

Meanwhile, a yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
