As predicted, Bersatu has announced that it will cling to the PN brand to save itself from drowning.
Bersatu President Muhyiddin Yassin announced that Bersatu will fight against PAS on all fronts in the upcoming elections using the PN logo, although PAS is also expected to use the PN logo in the very same elections.
PAS today, has classified Bersatu's decision as "odd" and urged it to exit PN if it desires to contest against PAS, but I have no doubt that it's urging will fall on deaf ears, just as how the urging that a drowning person should stop struggling will not have any effect on the drowning person.
So how will this impasse end ?
Well, I predict it will end with the election commission ordering both Bersatu and Pas to contest in the coming state elections using their own party logo instead of the PN logo.
Why?
Well, it is because the election commission is only empowered to stop a third party from using the PN logo.
But if it is the component parties of PN that is jostling to use the PN logo, then the election commission does not have the power to decide who actually possesses the right to use the PN logo.
Pas and Bersatu will likely have to take their dispute to court to reach a decision, and until the court issues a verdict, the election commission will likely deny both Pas and Bersatu, as well as the other component parties of PN, the right to use the PN logo in the upcoming elections.
How will this impact Bersatu and Pas's electoral prospect ?
It will have a negative impact on both Bersatu and Pas, but the impact on Pas is going to be smaller than the impact of Bersatu.
Pas might go through some difficulties and suffer some losses due to its inability to use the PN logo, but the impact is likely manageable, because Pas can still rely on the Pas brand to carry it through.
Bersatu, on the other hand, will likely be devastated. Without the PN brand, it will likely lose its deposit.
So what is the rationale of Bersatu's decision then, if it is going to result in a total loss ?
Well, if you ask me, the short and simple answer is that Bersatu's rationale is the same as the rationale of a drowning man who is clutching on straws to save himself.
There is no rationale behind their action. Theirs is just an irrational move by someone who is desperate to live, when faced with the prospect of imminent death.
