Pagasa sees fair weather in Luzon, rains in Visayas, Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines — Generally fair weather is expected in Metro Manila and most parts of Luzon in the coming days, while portions of the Visayas and Mindanao may experience scattered rains and thunderstorms, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Saturday.

Pagasa weather specialist Daniel James E. Villamil said in the agency's 5 p.m. forecast that the trough, or extension, of Typhoon Choi-wan was affecting parts of the Visayas and Mindanao.

As of 3 p.m., Choi-wan was about 2,580 kilometers east of Northern Luzon, outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). It had maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 170 kph and was moving northeastward at 20 kph.

"It is far from our country and it will not enter our PAR," Villamil said in Filipino and English.

The typhoon's trough is expected to bring cloudy skies, scattered rains and thunderstorms to parts of the Visayas and Mindanao in the coming days.

"We should remain prepared and alert for the threats of flooding and landslides, especially if the rains continue," Villamil said in Filipino.

Western Visayas, the Negros Island Region, Central Visayas and parts of Mindanao may be affected.

From Monday to Wednesday, generally fair weather is expected in Metro Manila and most parts of Luzon, including Baguio and Legazpi, although localized thunderstorms may occur in the afternoon and evening.

Parts of the Visayas, including Cebu, Iloilo and Tacloban, may experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms during the same period.

No gale warning was raised over the country's coastal waters, although thunderstorms offshore may cause sudden increases in winds and wave heights.
