Our eldest daughter, Jann and her husband, Faiz with their four children: Iffah, Ilfi, Yadh & Ilyan joined the entourage of her parents-in-law: Dato' Paduka Hj Mohd Puat & Dato' Hjh Che Barni for one week Eid al-Fitr vacation in China. During their story-telling session upon returning home revealed that the Muslim communities in metropolitan cities in Shanghai & Chengdu, featured large Eid al-Fitr morning prayers at Huxi Mosque on Change Road Shanghai, family gatherings, and community meals. Faiz said that, “Due to the high volume of Muslims performing prayers it extended onto the surrounding streets.”

Faiz added, “Families gathered for Eid al-Fitr meals featuring traditional delicious halal food, with spots for buying mutton skewers, other delicacies found near the mosque. Chengdu, known for its vibrant culinary scene, has specialized halal food, including street food areas with mutton, lamb, other delicacies, particularly in areas near the mosque in Wuhou District. While less concentrated than in Xinjiang or Beijing, the atmosphere remains festive with families holding traditional gatherings, exchanging gifts, and visiting the elderly. Local authorities maintain order during large gathering at mosques in the cities.”

My eldest grand-daughter, Iffah was impressed that “Shanghai is both a commercial center, and also an important center for the arts, culture, architecture and cinema. Shanghai is an international ultra modern first-tier city. Whereas, Chengdu, with a history of more than 3,000 years is the cradle of ancient Shu civilization making it one of the top ancient cities and one of the 1st national famous historical, cultural cities & one of the best tourist sites in China.”

For my youngest grand-daughter, Ilyan enjoyed sharing with me about “The two main breeding centers in Chengdu: Chengdu Panda Base & Dujiangyan Panda Base. Chengdu Panda Base is the largest panda base in the world & we can see over 50 pandas there, ranging from panda cubs to adult pandas.”
