Kota Kinabalu: Sabah surpassed their 66-gold medal target on the final day of the 2026 Para Sukma Games on Thursday.
They wrapped up the one-week event with an impressive tally of 69 gold, 51 silver and 43 bronze medals, securing second place just behind Selangor.
The hosts were crowned overall champions with a haul of 91 golds, 55 silvers and 52 bronzes, while defending champions Sarawak finished third with 52 golds, 31 silvers and 54 bronzes.
Sabah’s 66th gold medal was secured by archery duo Mohd Faizal Abdullah and Fakrul Azam Roslen in the men’s 50m round compound doubles PI2 event.
Meanwhile, having already rewritten two national records in the 100m backstroke (S5/6) and 50m backstroke (S5) earlier, swimmer Wahyu Eqwal Nazley smashed another national record with a time of 1:37.16s to claim gold in the 100m freestyle (S4/5).
Other final-day gold medallists included swimmer Suriyan Shah Malik (50m freestyle S11), archery duo Jaynie Jamirin and Suzillah Saunin in the women’s 70m round recurve double PI2, Charlie Jikulis and Fredoline Modius in the men’s 70m round recurve doubles PI2, alongside badminton players Charlie Fred Sagunting and Gladys Grace Didin in the mixed doubles SH6, and Gladys Grace Didin in the singles SH6 event, and badminton players Aliff Aldih and Brady Chin in the doubles MD18.
The silver medals were secured across three sports. The badminton squad earned five silvers through Masli Unsigang and Muhd Lizan Mat Sittim (doubles MD8), Gerald H.
Simbaku and Jerald Jaudy (doubles SL3/SU5), Gerald H. Simbaku (singles SU5), Mohd Asrun Mahadi (singles SL3) and Heaven Glory Grace Didin (singles SH6).
Archery added two more silvers from Mohd Fakrul Azam Roslen (compound individual PI2) and Fredoline Modius (recurve individual PI2), while swimmer Chen Zai Sheng claimed silver in the 100m freestyle S13.
The bronze medals were also delivered across three sports. In archery, Lidwina Isidore Andilah and Nurkhaduah Husna Budirman secured bronze in the 50m compound double PI2, while Lidwina Isidore and Suzillah Saunin earned individual bronze medals in the E-round compound individual PI2 and E-round recurve individual PI2, respectively.
Meanwhile, Jonathan Wong took home bronze in swimming for the 100m freestyle S4/5 and Jerald Jaudy claimed bronze in badminton for the singles SL3 event.
