SHAH ALAM, Sept 10 - Selangor made history by winning the overall Para SUKMA 2026 title with 200 medals, completing a double after also emerging overall champions at SUKMA 2026 last month.
The hosts collected 93 gold, 55 silver and 52 bronze medals to emerge overall champions.
Sabah finished second with 69 gold, 51 silver and 45 bronze medals, while Sarawak placed third with 52 gold, 32 silver and 54 bronze.
The achievement saw Selangor fulfil its target of reclaiming both the SUKMA and Para SUKMA overall titles, marking a historic feat for the state contingent.
More impressively, the 93 gold medals far exceeded its initial target of 60, reflecting the consistent performance of the host athletes throughout the Games.
At the closing ceremony of Para SUKMA 2026 at the Selangor International Trade Centre (SITC), the Selangor contingent had more reason to celebrate when state para swimmer Muhammad Safwan Suhaimi, 20, was named the Best Male Para Athlete of Para SUKMA Selangor 2026.
Safwan won six gold and one bronze medal, while breaking two national records in the S9 100-metre butterfly and SM9/SM10 200-metre individual medley events.
He also broke Games records in the S9 100-metre backstroke, S9 100-metre breaststroke, mixed 34-point 4x100-metre freestyle relay and mixed 34-point 4x100-metre medley relay events, while his bronze came in the men’s 34-point 4x100-metre medley relay.
The Best Female Para Athlete of Para SUKMA Selangor 2026 title went to Sarawak para athletics athlete Noshazwani Maisara Marzuki, 22, who also made headlines after breaking two Games records.
Noshazwani set new records in the F37 javelin and F37 shot put events, in addition to winning two gold and one silver medal.
In the F37 shot put, she recorded a distance of 8.93 metres to break the previous record of 7.25 metres. The mark also placed her among the world’s top 10 at Paralympic level.
Both athletes received RM5,000 in cash and a trophy, presented by Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari at the closing ceremony.
The ceremony was also attended by Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari and state executive councillor for youth and sports Mohd Najwan Halimi.
Selangor’s success completed the state contingent’s achievements in the two major Games this year after it also emerged overall champions at SUKMA 2026 with 101 gold medals.
