SHAH ALAM, Sept 10 - Selangor ends its hosting duties for the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) and Para SUKMA 2026 on a high note, with a double triumph after emerging overall champions of both Games.
Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the SUKMA torch would next be passed to Kelantan Darul Naim, which will host the 23rd SUKMA in 2028.
Amirudin said he was confident the competition would be tougher at the next edition and hoped athletes would make full use of the two-year period to further improve their performance.
“Tonight, the Para SUKMA battleground in Selangor has ended. The torch and the championship flag will be handed over to the 23rd SUKMA host, Kelantan Darul Naim in 2028.
“In the next two years, I believe the competition will be even greater in Kelantan,” he said when launching the Para SUKMA 2026 closing ceremony at the Selangor International Trade Centre (SITEC) here tonight.
Also present were Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari and state executive councillor for youth and sports Mohd Najwan Halimi.
Amirudin also expressed hope that the national para athletes would continue to achieve success and make their parents, families, communities, states and country proud.
He said sport was not merely a platform for competition and victory, but also one that could unite society.
At the same time, Amirudin expressed his appreciation to all 14 state contingents that took part in Para SUKMA Selangor 2026.
“Selangor is proud of all the achievements made by all the contingents that have competed. Win or lose, that is the custom of the Games. After 28 years since Selangor last hosted in 1998, I have seen that the level of the competition is much different.
“Congratulations and well done to all the winners. To the special athletes who have not achieved victory, believe that your efforts and sacrifices are still appreciated by all. Continue your efforts in pursuit of success,” he said.
The closing ceremony also saw Taufiq handing over the championship flag to Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud to mark their status as the next official host of Para SUKMA and SUKMA.
Earlier, Selangor made history by emerging overall champions of Para SUKMA 2026 with a haul of 200 medals, completing a double after winning the overall SUKMA 2026 title last month.
The Selangor Para SUKMA contingent collected 93 gold, 55 silver and 52 bronze medals to emerge overall champions.
