RANAU: Police detained two local men and seized 5.12 grammes of suspected syabu during an early-morning operation at an unnumbered house in Kampung Mata Kundasang here, Friday.
The suspects, aged 26 and 38, were detained at about 1am on Sept 12 following information received from the public and continuous intelligence gathering by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the Ranau District Police Headquarters.
The operation involved personnel from the division, assisted by the Criminal Investigation Division and the Community Safety and Crime Prevention Division of IPD Ranau.
Police said the two men were found in suspicious circumstances when officers arrived at the location.
A search of the premises subsequently led to the discovery of a black plastic box marked “Kenwood”, which was placed on the floor in front of the two suspects.
Further inspection of the box uncovered a transparent plastic packet containing a substance suspected to be syabu weighing 5.12g, along with a yellow lighter and a blue straw believed to have been modified for drug-related use.
Both suspects were arrested and the items seized for further investigation. The case is being investigated under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Police have also applied for a four-day remand order from Sept 13 to 16 for one of the suspects to facilitate further investigation, including the submission of the seized items for analysis and the recording of statements from the suspects and witnesses.
Ranau District Police Chief Supt Mursalin Mahmud said police would continue to intensify efforts to curb drug-related activities in the district.
He also urged members of the public to continue providing information on suspicious activities to assist police in preventing and combating crime.
