SHAH ALAM - Rather than catching a flight after Sunday's race in Sepang, Formula 1 (F1) driver Valtteri Bottas chose to cycle to Singapore, ahead of the next Grand Prix event.
The Cadillac driver is cycling around 350km, turning what would normally be a short trip between back-to-back grands prix into a very different kind of journey.
His journey began after his race in Sepang ended early, with Bottas spinning into the gravel on lap nine after starting on slick tyres in wet conditions.
It was reported that Bottas, speaking in the post-race team debrief, admitted that the decision to start on slick tyres had been a gamble that failed to pay off.
"It was always going to be a risk starting on the slicks with the soft tyre compound and today, it didn’t quite pay off.
"When the race started and I saw how fast the cars with the intermediate tyres went through, you quickly realise the situation you’re in. We thought the track would dry quicker, and we thought it was worth trying something, but in the end it didn't work out.
"I took some risks trying to keep up with the pack and in the end it was my mistake that ended our race, and I can only apologise to the team for that," he was reported as saying.
From there, Bottas swapped his race car for his bicycle and continued south, with the Finnish driver expected to reach Singapore in time for his media commitments on Thursday.
