MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) issued yellow and red alerts for the Visayas grid on Friday due to outages from major power plants amid high consumption.
In its 8 a.m. advisory, the yellow alert will be between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. The red alert will be in effect between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. as peak demand is estimated to reach 2,536 megawatts (MW) against an available capacity of only 2,359 MW.
The transmission firm said that 22 plants were on forced outage and 20 were running on derated capacities for a total of 782.2 MW unavailable to the grid.
The continued unavailability of the Therma Visayas Inc.1, Therma Visayas Inc. 2, and KEPCO SPC Power Corporation Unit 1 and the limited power imports from Mindanao due to the outages of some power plants there have prompted the NGCP to raise the alerts.
A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
A red alert is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.
