Kota Kinabalu: A 41-year-old man was fined RM2,000, or six months’ jail in default, by the Magistrate’s Court here for failing to produce his identity card for inspection by police.
Melvin pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to committing the offence at about 10.50pm on Aug 18 in Manggatal town.
He was charged under Regulation 25(1)(n) of the National Registration Regulations 1990, which provides for a maximum fine of RM20,000 or imprisonment for up to three years upon conviction.
The court heard that police detained Melvin on the said day and asked him to produce his identity document during an inspection.
However, he failed to do so. A subsequent check found that he had an identity card but was not carrying it at the time.
In a separate case, an undocumented man was jailed three months for possessing several items without a reasonable explanation.
Harris Ansari, 31, pleaded guilty to possessing a green Total drill, a Total hacksaw, a wire cutter and a pair of grip pliers without a reasonable explanation.
He committed the offence at about 5.30pm on Aug 23 in front of a house at Signal Hills, Lorong Merak, Jalan Bukit Bendera.
The charge was framed under Section 18(e) of the Minor Offences Ordinance, Cap. 80, which provides for a jail term of up to six months, a fine, or both upon conviction.
The court heard that police detained Harris at the location and found cable-cutting equipment and several rolls of cable in his possession.
The items and cables were seized before Harris was arrested.
Magistrate Marilyn ordered Harris to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest and to be referred to the Immigration Department thereafter.
