According to XUAN解忧树洞, a 39 year old Malaysian man working in Singapore has found himself questioning whether he has spent more than RM500,000 on love… or fallen into a relationship that may never have been genuine.
The man said he first met a Vietnamese woman at an entertainment venue after the pandemic in 2021. She allegedly told him that she had been tricked into coming to Malaysia and needed money to leave. Feeling sorry for her, he paid around RM30,000 to help her.
That was only the beginning.
She later asked him for money for various reasons, including the deaths of family members, eventually receiving nearly RM100,000 from him before disappearing for more than a year.
Then, towards the end of 2024, she suddenly contacted him again and said she had returned to Malaysia for work.
The man met her once more, and their relationship gradually developed. She even agreed to become his mistress. He eventually cut ties with another Vietnamese woman he had been seeing because of her.
When she claimed to have debts from loan sharks, he helped pay off around RM100,000. He subsequently helped settle debts in both Malaysia and Vietnam, with his total spending eventually exceeding RM500,000…. almost all of his savings.
Throughout their relationship, she continued working at a KTV establishment. The man also came across negative reviews about her and said the issue had caused repeated arguments between them.
She continued asking him for financial assistance, including money for medical expenses involving her family and Chinese New Year expenses.
At one point, she told him that she wanted to marry him and have children together. She even brought him to Vietnam to meet her family.
However, she later made another request.
She wanted to build a house for her parents, which would cost around RM200,000, and hoped he could borrow money to help finance it.
That was when the man began questioning everything.
He realised that the cheerful person he once was had gradually become exhausted, emotionally drained and constantly affected by the relationship. At the same time, she often criticised him for being immature and lacking proper financial planning.
Now, he feels trapped by the money he has already spent.
If he walks away, more than RM500,000 will be gone with no guarantee of getting anything back.
But if he stays, another RM200,000 and potentially even more… may be required.
She may genuinely marry him and start a family with him. Yet he is increasingly afraid that continuing the relationship could cost him more than just his savings.
He is now left with one painful question:
Should he accept the RM500,000 as a sunk cost and walk away, or risk even more in the hope that the relationship will eventually become a happy marriage?
