Lady Altas beat Lady Cardinals, take top spot in Group A

University of Perpetual Help System Dalta closed its elimination round schedule with a hard-earned 25-20, 21-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-6 victory over Mapua University in the NCAA Season 101 women's volleyball tournament at San Andres Gym in Malate, Manila, Sunday.

Opposite Hitter Cyrille Almeniana fired a career high 28 points, 27 of which came from attacks, to lead the Lady Altas, who earned the top spot in Group A with an 11-2 record going into the quarterfinal round.

Jemalyn Menor and Camille Bustamante added 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Setter Fianne Ariola finished with 27 excellent sets out of 145 attempts and libero Jodi Lozano chipped in 15 digs and 13 receptions.

Mapua was led by Alex Liebres and Raissa Ricablanca, who scored 18 points apiece.

In the men’s division, the Altas also scored a five-set victory over the Cardinals, 20-25, 14-25, 25-14, 25-16, 15-4.

John Castil tallied a game high 17 points on account of 12 attacks, 4 blocks and a service ace to lead the Altas, who tallied a 10-3 record in Group A.   Marc Tangon added 13 points and Zain Mohammad netted 10 points for Perpetual Help.

The Altas are now waiting for the result of the game between College of Saint Benilde and Mapua on Wednesday to determine who will clinch the top spot in Group A as Blazers currently has a 9-3 record. 

The top two teams in Groups A and B will have a twice to beat edge against their respective oppoents in the quarterfinal round.
