Battling personal hardships and financial challenges, Sharan Rani, the daughter of a single mother, has emerged as the district topper in the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) Class XII examinations.

Sharan, a commerce stream student of Bliss Public School, Santokhpura, secured 487 marks out of 500, registering an impressive 97.40 per cent. She also secured the 14th position in the state.

Dreaming of becoming a chartered accountant, Sharan got 99 marks each in accountancy, economics and general English, 98 in Punjabi and 92 in business studies. For her, accountancy has always been more than just a subject.

“Accounts is my favourite subject and that is why I decided to pursue chartered accountancy,” she said.

Behind her success stands the unwavering support and sacrifices of her mother Shweta Sharma, who singlehandedly raised her children. Working as a purchase manager at a local firm near Nehru Garden in Jalandhar, Shweta said her daughter’s achievement has made years of struggle worthwhile.

“I am happy today as my daughter has become the district topper. I could not continue my studies because I was married at an early age and later got divorced at 26 but I always wanted my daughter to become successful,” she added.

Shweta said Sharan remained focused on academics throughout the year and stayed away from distractions. “She never used social media and always remained dedicated towards studies,” she said.

She is fond of drawing and often spends her free time in artwork to relax after long study hours.

Sharan, who is the youngest among her three siblings, credited her mother and teachers for her success. “My teachers were always there whenever I needed help. Their guidance and my mother’s support motivated me to work harder,” she said.

Her teacher Pratima described her as a sincere and disciplined student. “She has always been dedicated towards studies. We never had to tell her things twice. She remained focused, humble and hardworking throughout,” she said.
