Kota Kinabalu: Vehicles impounded by City Hall (DBKK) for parking violations risk being forfeited and auctioned off if owners fail to claim them within 30 days, Mayor Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah (pic) warned on Tuesday, The Star reported.
Speaking to reporters after presenting appointment letters to 100 Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) members at Wisma Wanita, Sabin said 52 vehicles had already undergone the forfeiture process after being held past the one-month deadline.
To secure the release of impounded vehicles, owners are required to settle all outstanding compounds, a RM350 towing charge, and a RM150 nightly storage fee, with legal action pending for non-compliance.
Dismissing online speculation that the towing exercise was designed to generate municipal revenue, the Mayor stressed that enforcement serves as a deterrent to maintain traffic order, noting that officers issue siren and loudspeaker warnings before towing.
He added that with around 20,000 parking bays available across the city—including 400 spaces at KK Plaza for RM1—there is ample capacity, yet errant motorists continue to double-park and obstruct road medians.
