A 3.3-magnitude earthquake hit Kuamut, Kinabatangan at 5.32am today. Inspections found no collapses or structural damage to buildings.
KINABATANGAN: A weak earthquake, measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale, hit Kuamut here at 5.32 am today, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).
It said the epicentre of the quake was 5.1 degrees north latitude and 116.8 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 118 kilometres, about 223 kilometres northwest of Tarakan, Indonesia, and 32 kilometres southwest of Tongod, Sabah.
The quake did not pose any tsunami threat to Malaysia, it added.
Meanwhile, Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station chief Suriyadi Drawis said a team of six firefighters conducted patrols and monitoring in Kinabatangan at 6.26 am following the report of the earthquake.
He said the team inspected the Sabah Economic Development Corporation (Sedco) premises, Bukit Garam Library, Bukit Garam Point and other areas identified as being at risk.
“The inspection found no collapses or structural damage to any of the buildings checked,” he said in a statement.
He added that the team also advised local residents to remain vigilant in case of aftershocks.
