Weak 3.3-magnitude earthquake strikes Kinabatangan

A WEAK 3.3-magnitude earthquake struck Kuamut in Kinabatangan, Sabah, at 5.32am today, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

MetMalaysia said the epicentre was located at 5.1 degrees North and 116.8 degrees East, at a depth of 118 kilometres.

The earthquake occurred 223km northwest of Tarakan, Indonesia, and 34km southwest of Tongod.

There was no tsunami threat from the earthquake, MetMalaysia said.

Meanwhile, Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station chief Suriyadi Drawis said no calls had been received regarding the earthquake so far.

"However, we are conducting patrols and inspecting buildings at several locations around Kinabatangan," he said. - September 26, 2026
