TONGOD: Kuamut Assemblyman Datuk Masiung Banah (pic) has urged the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) to immediately install an early warning system in earthquake-prone areas of Kuamut following a weak 3.3-magnitude earthquake at 5.32am on Saturday.
He said although the tremor did not cause panic among residents, the installation of automatic seismic sensors in risk areas of Tongod should be expedited amid concerns over possible stronger aftershocks.
Masiung said MetMalaysia should install early earthquake detectors in the district as Kuamut had previously recorded a 3.6-magnitude earthquake at a depth of 280km on July 17 this year.
He said he had instructed Tongod District Officer Hadzlan Jablee to identify affected areas, including checking for possible cracks in public infrastructure, while full reports from the Civil Defence Department, Public Works Department and police had yet to be received.
“Earthquakes usually recur and MetMalaysia should immediately take responsibility for installing early earthquake detection sensors in Kuamut before another incident occurs with greater risks,” he said.
